So you keep hearing these words "self-care" thrown around and hashtagged on instagram. Reading captions like "Are you practicing self care? How do you self care?" and then seeing the #Selfcaresundays right? You start thinking about whether you're practicing self care or if you need to be- but first of all i know what you are thinking. What exactly is Self Care?
Grab your tea or coffee and settle in, I am about to break it down for you.
Self care is the practice of taking action to preserve or improve our mental, physical and emotional well-being. In my own personal opinion I like to think of self-care as consciously doing something for YOU that brings YOU inner joy. Taking time for yourself.
I'll be the first to admit that only within the last year have I actively made effort and taken action for self-care because I noticed the difference in myself and how I felt when I didn't take time for myself. One of the biggest factors I hear of people not taking time for themselves is that they feel guilty and that they don't have time.
Since when did taking a bath, going for a walk, sitting alone with a book becomes selfish? When did spending time on our own well-being become a "guilty pleasure"? When did being busy say more about our self-worth than taking time out? Starting my business Katoa Collection is my driver for changing the story of these questions, turning guilt into pleasure and time in quality time.
What happens when you ask yourself this question? Well, I'll tell you what happened for me. I realised I was completely kidding myself and that I didn't have 5 minutes I could spare, I could spare 2 hours. I actually had the time. I looked at my every day pattern and how I spent my day and noticed there was so much stuff that was not of any use for my mental or physical well-being ie. Lying on the couch scrolling my phone for 2 hours every arvo after work.
So i leave you with Two Questions.
1. Do you have 5 minutes in your day to take for yourself?
2. What do you do in your day that is completely for yourself and brings you joy?
I am so open to hearing about your answers so feel free to leave me a comment, email or DM at @katoacollection.
